"The most important element the new medium adds to our repertoire of representational powers is its procedural nature. Its ability to capture experience as systems of interrelated actions. We are engaged in establishing the building blocks of a procedural medium, the musical figures that may someday grow into a symphonic form" Janet H. Murray, Hamlet on the Holodeck
What is the future of narrative in cyberspace? Can we find new ways to tell our stories using these multimedia tools? Is the web a good medium for distributing these stories? In what ways can we encourage new voices to the heard, and alter the relationship between artist, producer and audience? Does the story ultimately remain the same, or is there something very different about narrative on the web?
"I have this idea. There is a thing that I call city-based storytelling. It's somewhere in between a personal journal and a travel book. It's a series of personal stories where the city itself becomes a character in your story. It's a network of city-based storytelling sites, tying real people in real cities all over the world together with a thread of personal stories."Derek Powazek
The first City Stories site was www.sfstories.com San Francisco Stories by www.powazek.com Derek Powazek. After it went up, people in other cities around the world started to build similar sites, and together they form the expanding City Stories network. All the sites in the network are owned and operated by volunteers - real people who really live in their cities. Their only obligation to the project is to keep telling their stories.
Most of the stories featured on the linked City Stories sites are text-based, in the form of a short piece of observational writing, diary record or personal reflection, blog or rant. People are encouraged to respond to topical themes and others? stories, as well as contributing their original piece of writing. Some sites include such features as a photo gallery or city links page.
