MATT BLACK - COLDCUT DEMONSTRATION

We’ve got a new single which is called Cooking with Coldcut and we’ve made this video to go with it. When we make a video we don't just take a song that we’ve already done and put visuals on top of it; most videos that you see on MTV are basically people getting the microphone and standing in front of the camera and miming along to a track that’s already been made.

It’s possible to make videos in a different way to that: we have the phrase “What You See Is What You Hear” which describes audio-visual composition where you take audio-visual samples and bolt them together to make a rhythm pattern and a piece of music. We used cooking as a theme for this piece because we thought that cooking had a lot of good images that go with good sounds.

Coldcut, work in progress, from their forthcoming album on Ninjatune www.ninjatune.net

So that’s Cooking with ColdCut. I just showed that because it illustrates what we’ve been talking about. It’s basically an audio-visual composition but going a bit further than just bolting a video on afterwards to a song you’ve recorded.
