BRENDA: When I was ten

The children said:

"You’ll never grow up

You will always stay the same

You’ll never get married

Cause you aint got the brains."

Tape: Glory, glory.........

As tape plays, Marilyn, Roy, Claude, Kathy, Sarah, Jacky make circle.

2nd time ‘Glory’ is sung, the group join in, tape fades.

Brenda joins circle.

Chris breaks circle and stands in the middle:: DIP, dip, dip,

My blue ship

Sailing in the water like a cup and saucer

gets to Brenda, says: You’re not it!

Chris pushes Brenda out of circle and takes her place. Brenda stands in front, head bowed, then goes to mic:

BRENDA: When I was ten

The children said:

"You’ll never grow up

You will always stay the same

You’ll never get married

Cause you aint got the brains."

I believed them at the time

I thought they were right

Because the specialist said the same

You will always be like this

And you’ll never, never change.

Brenda steps away from mic, picks-up skipping rope.

BRENDA: Blackberry, blackberry, raspberry jam

Tell me the name of your young man

ROY: you’re not it

CHRIS: you’re not it

GROUP: you’re not it

GROUP: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me (repeat)

Brenda starts to skip....when finished she walks to mic

BRENDA: Sticks and stones may break my bones

But names can hurt and harm you inside

They touch a tender spot

They make you feel horrible

Names stick in your heart

Once called a name

It stays in your mind all the time

When you are called a name enough

You get to think it is right

You can’t get away from it.

Names.

It spreads like measles

Name calling is like an epidemic.

ROY: When I was small

I saw lots of doctors

They always looked tall

So you cricked your neck looking at them

They always seemed to be against you

White coats

Stethoscopes and masks

That put you off

That made you think

That you wouldn’t see your Mum again

That made you think

They were going to do something awful to you

Steve rings bell. CHRIS, JOHN, KEV, CLAUDE, MIKE, RICH stand, all put coats on. Slowly...check each other for collars etc. When ready, stand behind Steve.

ROY: And sometimes they came

More than one

Lots of them

Like ghosts in their white coats

I felt like it wasn’t fair

All those doctors just to see one little boy

And they all said

You can’t,

You can’t,

You can’t.

DOCTORS: You can’t, you can’t, you can’t.

CHRIS: But don’t worry, we’ll look after you.

All those doctors just to see one little boy

And they all said

You can’t,

You can’t,

You can’t.

DOCTORS: You can’t,You can’t,You can’t,

ROY: They seemed to work hard, every day

To take my human rights away

Those doctors did not fly

All they did was lie.

Enter Brenda and Jacky. Jacky takes the ‘F’ off the banner. Walks front with Brenda, throws ‘F’ down.

BRENDA: THEY’RE THE LYING DOCTORS.

Marilyn covers face with hands. Freeze. Enter Jacky.

JACKY: The Lying doctors:

Why listen to them?

They tell you a load of trash

Tripe, codsbollocks, lies.

They make you feel bad.

Why can’t they tell the truth?

Steve rings bell: NEXT! Exit Marilyn and Kathy hand-in-hand. Jacky, exit. Mike returns to doctors.

Richard comes front of stage: THIS IS A FILE Goes to masked doctors. They bring out pencils and notebooks, write, tear out page. Richard collects from each doctor. Meanwhile, Roy enter with Kevin with chair. Chris stands next to Roy. When Rich comes over, Chris to Roy: SIT.

John goes to other doctors: I’ve got a man in there who tried to hit me.

Kev: He’s deaf. He’s signing

John: OH. Back to Alex, shouts: So you’re deaf?

Alex: You can piss off. (walks out)

John: What’s wrong with him?

Steve rings bell. John goes back to doctors. Sarah, Kathy, Marilyn enter, stand in a row.

Roy to mic.

ROY: The lying doctors:

They write things down before you’ve even opened your mouth

They make their own minds up.

They think they know about you without listening.

They’ve all got their own ideas about you.

They make your decisions for you.

While Roy reads doctors watch Steve.....look at watches/yawn.

Rich points at Sarah: DAY CENTRE.

Alan takes Sarah off.

John points at Kathy: HOSPITAL

Tina takes Kathy off

Joan takes Marilyn off.

Steve rings bell: NEXT.

Enter Jacky, joins Roy at mic

JACKY: When I was fifteen

Two doctors in white coats

Tested me because I was slow

They tested me to see

If I was capable to get on in this life

ROY:

They said:

I was very slow (doctors: SLOW)

I couldn’t count good (doctors: no good)

I was not capable of doing anything (doctors: anything)

I would not get on in this life

JACKY: They wanted to send me away

Take me away from my family

The doctors have the say

Not your own family

They had to sign papers

To say: ‘Put her in a special school’

To say: ‘She’s slow, send her away’

Kathy comes to front of stage. All doctors: Send her away.

Jacky: They threatened my mum

Said I’d do better in a home

I often think back now

They thought I didn’t understand

But I knew what it was all about

I wasn’t stupid

If I saw them now

I’d tell them off

Stop doing it

It is wrong

Stop telling people who they are

We know best

I know best about myself.

Marilyn, Brenda, Kathy, Sarah, Alex to front. Everyone says: STOP.

BRENDA: Stop telling people who they are

We know best

I know best about myself.

ROY and ALEX: Stop telling people who they are

We know best

I know best about myself.

People lead off...Jacky and her group first, then Tina and her group, then Steve and his group. When sat down again, we say: Sticks and stones may break my bones... we do this twice and then...

Roy: Sticks and stones may break my bones

But names will never hurt me

Yet when they die

They’ll think of me

And remember the names they called me.

Lights go down, when lights go up everyone moves forward to take bow.
