'I'm not there' by Joan Goodyear

She said: get in that cupboard

And sit down on that chair

I can’t remember what I did wrong

Crying like that

Crying in my heart

Right down in my chest

Coming out of my chest

She got me nervous

Mrs Casswell, she’s my teacher

I went into the cupboard

She put me in there

With the dust pan and brush

She locked me in with a key

She locked me out

She made it dark

She gave me frightening

She gave me lonely

All on my own.

No teaching for me

All the others working

They do learning

But not me

She would not let me get out

Not to work; not to learn
