This could extend into 2 sessions if time, and lead to further creative writing work.

Objectives:

• to describe and evaluate the style of an individual poet
• to comment critically on the overall impact of a poem, showing how language and themes have been developed
• to produce revised poems for reading aloud individually

Resources:

• Flip chart
• Project books
• Film: The Wrong Flowers. You will need to view the film again in school with a group of students. The film can be seen:
  • on video
  • high quality print at a pre-arranged screening at a local theatre

Poem: The Wrong Flowers

Input: Look again at Brenda’s poem; analyse the style and impact.

Tell the children that they are going to write a poem about their lives, like Brenda did. They are going to write the poem in pairs or small groups, and then plan four shots each of a different type to tell the story of their poem. Their finished product will be a PowerPoint presentation of these four shots with them reading the poem as a voice over.

The images that they choose could be digital photos, a drawing, a photo or image scanned into the computer etc.

Explain the structure of the poem they are going to write:

When I was a child I would…
When I am an adult I could…
Caught in between the two I am…

Activity:: Using the carousel brainstorm and filter ideas for things that we can / could do at different stages in our lives. Head up the papers:

When I was a baby I could…
When I was 5 I could…
Now I am 10/11 I can…
When I am 18 I could…
When I am 40 I could…
When I am 80 I could…

Continue to write poems

Ideas for plenary:

• Using the children’s shared ideas write the first line of the poem. “When I was a child I would…”
• Show examples from children’s poems
• Complete the poems
• Plan four images, think about objects, colour etc. and how feelings are shown.
• Capture images and load onto PowerPoint - If this is not possible they could draw four images, or use overhead transfers for projection,
• Practice and perform individually, in pairs or in small groups
