Sessions 5-6 working with the film

session 5:  reading the film part 1

1. Hand out colour copies of the stills from the website. In pairs or threes, pupils should arrange the images into groups and give each of the groups a headingwhich describes the stills they have put together. Examples might be shots of Brenda, settings, shots of the school, shots which represent a specific mood.

2. Look at the poem again with the class and decide which, if any, of the stills can be easily matched to lines of the poem.

3. Discuss with pupils ways in which memory works. Talk about how this might be shown in film. Discuss the notion of flashback.

4. Watch the film again. Discuss the main character, Brenda, and the way in which her character is shown through film language.

5. Discuss the different settings and what they add to our understanding of the main character, Brenda, and her story. Talk about the use of colour and the use of different types of shot to show setting.

Ask pupils to think about why we see:

And why we see them represented as they are in the film.

session 6: reading the film part 2

1. With pupils discuss the sequencing of the material. In The Wrong Flowers, the beginning, middle and end are not in this order; discuss why this could be.

2. Show the film again.

3. Model the deconstruction of the film. Use the links in the table to view images, or use this table (includes links to larger still images) with pupils.
