In 1833, during the Portuguese civil war, the usurper Don Miguel's troops tried to destroy all the port stored at Villa Nova de Gaia. British Port merchants such as Cockburn and Croft had their wine there, so British troops were sent to save their goods. 130 British seamen and 20 marines with weapons and buckets landed, in spite of the torrents of boiling wine pouring into the river, and managed to save upwards of £150,000 of wine and brandy from destruction.
