Screen Beats

moving image inspired by music

Screen Beats is a collection of music videos created by groups of young people in Cornwall during after school digital media clubs. Following an 'inspiration day' with composer Graham Fitkin and video artists from Kaplan, the groups were encouraged to see beyond the ubiquitous 'performer as the main focus' model of music videos, and to tell stories without words; to explore and imagine the visual tone, atmosphere and narrative of music. Industry professionals worked with the young people to develop practical filmmaking skills to create the videos which were premiered at Cornwall Film Festival and are showcased here on dShed.net

The digital media clubs located at Humphry Davy School; Camborne Science and Community College with the CPR Learning Space; Newquay Tretherras School; Bodmin College; Looe Community School and Saltash Community School, have offered some of the young people involved their first ever taste of filmmaking - from storyboarding ideas, through pre-production to shooting and editing, on-location shoots, and finally screening and distribution.

Filmmaker mentors included: Richard Stuart, Simon Harvey, Steven Paige, Denzil Monk, Emma George, Tony Hill and Pete McMurdie assisted by Tom Harding.

Shadowing them were: Ian Brinton, Naomi Ross, Brett Harvey, Stuart Lansdowne and Dean Burt.

Young people as peer mentors to the Camborne club were: Jason Bennelick, Chris Salway, Kieron Thomas, Vicky Uglow and Jack Williams - more of their work can be seen at www.dshed.net/bytesize

Screen Beats is a Creative Partnerships (www.creative-partnerships.com) project in partnership with the Cornwall Film Festival (www.cornwallfilmfestival.com), South West Screen (www.swscreen.co.uk) and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation (www.phf.org.uk).
