"The most important element the new medium adds to our repertoire of representational powers is its procedural nature. Its ability to capture experience as systems of interrelated actions. We are engaged in establishing the building blocks of a procedural medium, the musical figures that may someday grow into a symphonic form" Janet H. Murray, Hamlet on the Holodeck
What is the future of narrative in cyberspace? Can we find new ways to tell our stories using these multimedia tools? Is the web a good medium for distributing these stories? In what ways can we encourage new voices to the heard, and alter the relationship between artist, producer and audience? Does the story ultimately remain the same, or is there something very different about narrative on the web?
www.360degrees.org - Alison Cornyn and Sue Johnson
Not so much an artwork, as a participatory examination of the US criminal justice system created by the artists Alison Cornyn and Sue Johnson.
Through first person stories and interactive data, the site takes a critical look at who is in prison today in the United States and why. Inmates, lawyers, parole officers, parents, victims and
others tell their stories. Each story is told from the perspective of five or six people. While listening, the user can investigate each speaker?s personal space by revolving 360 degrees around prison cells, judicial chambers, offices and living rooms. The site also provides a virtual space where people with different experiences can come together, share their stories and opinions, and engage in productive dialogue.
