Shrine Project

by Priya Chauhan

Priya Chauhan's striking mixed media and digitally manipulated images are inspired by texture. Her current experimentation and manipulation of materials has led to her work becoming more abstract. Using materials such as paints, powders, sand, rice and tissue, she overlaps techniques combining traditional art with digital methods.

Work such as 'Lucid Dreams' (below) has been inspired by the impression fairytales make on the subconscious combined with an interest in people’s preoccupation with self image, to create an alternative beauty. Layering brushes in Photoshop to produce unusual textures; the result is an obscure and almost disturbing image. The figures depicted are indistinct and ambiguous, giving the atmosphere of a bad dream. The decayed, eroded and burnt surfaces remind the viewer that everything is temporary.

Since graduating in Textile Design, Priya has established herself as a freelance artist and designer based in Loughborough. She recently presented a solo exhibition at Leicester City Art Gallery which focused on themes of the 'Goddess', Hinduism, mythology and the supernatural.
