Notes on a conception of a film

(2007) 14cm x 10cm (B&W hand-tinted photographs with text)

The work consists of a series of 24 hand-tinted black and white photographs and hand-written text selected from a personal archive of 100 digital photographic images. The images were taken in various locations around the world and can be seen as a series of private encounters with different landscapes. They are presented with no identification as to the specific locations they were taken or any chronology but as the title suggests they are presented as notes on a conception of a probable film.

Referencing both the 24 frames of a filmic second and a possible storyboard and blending narrative and documentary, the notes explore narrative moments and attempt to construct the landscape of a personal geography. The hand-tinted process brings to mind the childlike activity of colour-in books as ways of making sense of space, colour, architecture and perspective. But can ultimately be read as the artist’s attempt to question representation and to instill the photographed spaces in the personal imaginary.
