I’ve been working at the Watershed for six years now, which says something in itself about the kind of place it is. A long time ago I did some paintings and sculptures and stuff, and I submitted a couple of pieces (pictured) to the last Watershed staff exhibition. Not wanting to repeat myself, I’m doing a painting especially for this one, although it will also serve to cover a fairly large blank area of wall in my new flat prior to, and after, the exhibition.

Pretty much everything I ever did was inspired by natural growth patterns, simple mathematical formulas and shapes which govern all the forms we see around us in the natural world. When painting, I try to produce abstract images which have great depth, but no sense of scale. By using red as the background colour and painting the foreground shapes in contrastingly cool blues and greens, I hope to slightly subvert and work against the rules of colour perspective by making cold colours stand out in front of warm ones. Just for a laugh, like.

More than anything else, though, I want to make something which is nice to look at.
