Nina Midgley

My name is Nina Midgley, I was born in London, but grew up in Lewes near Brighton. Now I live in Bristol, studying illustration. After finishing my A-levels I went on to study Multimedia at Brighton City college. I studied Web Design, image manipulation and animation, but after the first year decided the course wasn't developing my creative side enough, so moved to Bristol and enrolled in illustration. It was a scary, but beneficial move which has meant i now have the skills to bring traditional 2D designs together with technical processes.

My style is always developing, and I like trying new things and making the most out of the freedom I get at university. Since Christmas I have made a jacket influenced by Homers Odyssey, a pastiche on the illustrator Quentin Blake and a short animation exploring the movement in fair grounds.

My work usually starts in a small sketch book, jotting down ideas, inspirations and compositions. I take photographs, sketch on location and from life, then scan textures and use Adobe Photoshop to collage elements of all my sketches together.

Sometimes I use a light box to do this collaging process by hand, tracing bits of my initial sketches to create the look i want and scan the final piece for manipulation on the computer.

My aim for the next few years is to complete and enjoy my course, making the most out of the opportunities that I come across and hopefully find someone willing to offer me work experience which will enrich my learning experience.
